Date Rape
By: Michael Flynn
Date Rape Drugs are any drugs people use to rape and assault victims of their choice aiding the perpetrators by causing the victims to sometimes pass out and forget what happened the night before. These drugs are often put into drinks without the person even knowing and they force the victim to be confused about what is happening to themselves leaving them defenseless for themselves and allowing the abuser to harm them in any way. A study has shown that nearly eleven million women in the United States have been drugged and raped. The term “date rape drug” doesn’t necessarily mean that the two are in a relationship, they can be someone you are close with, someone you know of, or a complete stranger.
These assaults are very common on college campuses and effect college students every day. On average, 15% of college students get drugged and raped their freshmen year of college. Researchers found that 18% of the victims have been raped while on these drugs and found the drugs in their system afterwards, not known what happened the night before and that they were in fact raped.
The most common way date rape drugs are used is through a mixture of alcohol and other dangerous drugs that can affect your body. Most of the time the victim is unaware that the drugs are in the drink and abuse the drink even more without realizing it. These drugs dissolve within the drinks given to the victims making them clueless and not knowing what they are putting into their bodies. They tend to pass out or fall victim to being raped. Very rarely when these drugs are put into a drink, the drink will change into a different color and/or become very cloudy. This is a danger because most of these drugs are out into a dark drink such as Pepsi where you cannot see the cloudiness from the drug.
These drugs often tend to affect you rather quickly where you may not even know that something is wrong. Victims have said they have felt dizziness, slurred speech, sleepy, and many other outcomes from the drugs. A problem with these drugs is that the side effects are very similar to drinking just alcohol, so no one really knows that they have been drugged. These drugs often effect critical thinking in the time you need it most and especially effect your memory and make you forget important events during the night.
To protect yourself from situation involving these drugs and to keep yourself safe, there are multiple tips for doing so. It is encouraged to stay away from a punch bowls at parties as you have no idea what could possible be in the juice. Similarly, it is highly discouraged to accept drinks from other people especially people you do not know. It is encouraged rather then accepting a drink from someone, get your own and make sure to open it up yourself. It is also important to notice anything odd about the drink that you’re drinking, from smell to the way it tastes, and the color of the drink, if suspicious of the drink, you should throw it out or tell a friend so you can get the possible help that you need as soon as possible.
An important tip that many have fail to acknowledge is to keep an eye out for friends you go out with and other people around you. Any suspicious behavior should be reported, and that person needs to seek help immediately. Instead of calling the police right away, that person should be sent to the hospital because they may be at serious risk and in danger of harm.
