What is Volunteer Training?
Volunteer training is for individuals interested in becoming a Direct Service Volunteer. Direct Service means volunteers can interact directly with victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence. Direct Service Volunteers can help with a variety of The Women Center services like helping staff on our crisis hotline, providing shelter coverage, co-facilitating support groups for adults and children, and much more! You have many more opportunities to volunteer when you are trained.
Who can take volunteer training?
Anyone who is interested in helping change the lives of victims of Domestic and Sexual Violence can participate in Volunteer Training. Volunteers that complete the Volunteer Training are potential candidates for internships at The Women's Center.
How long is volunteer training?
Volunteer training is a nine-week course (Thursdays 6pm-9pm), which covers topics including, but not limited to, Domestic Violence Issues, Domestic Violence Issues with Children, Rape, Incest, Feminist Counseling, Empowerment Counseling, Teen/Dating Violence, Community Resources, Safety Planning, Medical Advocacy, and Role Plays. There's so much to learn, so don't wait; sign up today.
When does training begin?
You can sign up for the next training for Fall 2019. If this doesn't work out for you, the training course is held every fall and spring semester.
Does it cost anything?
The training is FREE. We will supply you with a welcome packet and a training manual. All we ask for is a $40 deposit. Once training is complete, and you have donated 12 hours of your time volunteering and completing 8 additional educational hours, you will receive your $40 back.
What about holiday breaks from school?
Don't worry! We won't have training during your breaks! That's your time to relax and have a fun and safe break.
I have completed the direct service volunteer training and have been told I need to complete additional training. How much additional training is required and how can I fulfill this requirement?
Direct service volunteers are required to have at least 8 hours of additional DV/SA-related training per fiscal year. You can receive additional training through events, workshops, classes, books, articles, and/or videos that may be relevant to your work in direct service. Additionally, volunteers may attend TWC staff in-services and/or take any online modules available to them that were not required of the original training. In-service training's are held the second Wednesday of each month at 1pm at the administrative building and staff meetings are held the last Wednesday of each month beginning at 12:30pm. For questions regarding specific ways to receive additional training, please contact the Volunteer & Community Outreach Advocate.
